| | Champions League, Matchday One Naples, a grounded plane and a back four held together by faithArsenal begin the competition that got away from them last May with their best centre-half in rehab, their new one two games old, and a captain playing better than he has in three years. Wednesday at the Maradona is a test of the squad, not the eleven. The plane sat on the tarmac at Luton for most of Tuesday afternoon. A technical failure in the UK's air traffic control flight-processing system grounded departures nationwide, and Arsenal, who should have been walking out for a routine evening press conference inside the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, instead landed in Naples at around half past nine local time. UEFA waved through the cancellation of Mikel Arteta's media duties. The champions of England arrive in southern Italy having lost a day of preparation and gained a small, useful grievance. It is a fittingly awkward overture. Arsenal come into this competition carrying a wound that has not properly closed: the Champions League final in May, lost to Paris Saint-Germain, the one trophy the Arteta era has reached for and dropped. They also arrive as domestic champions with a perfect start, nine points from nine, six goals scored and one conceded, and a manager whose contract is being rewritten around him. The mood is good. The medical room is not. |

| William Saliba is the absence that reorganises everything. He aggravated a pre-existing back problem playing for France in their World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain, was substituted, and has not played since. Saliba is the defender who has started more Premier League minutes than any other Arsenal player of the last four years. Arsenal confirmed that extensive assessment concluded surgery was not recommended and that he faces a period of rehabilitation rather than an operation, which is the better of two bad outcomes. Reported target dates have crept towards late November. Nobody at the club will put a number on it. So the centre of Arsenal's defence on Wednesday is likely to be Ezri Konsa, signed from Aston Villa for a fee reported at around £55m and handed his debut against Chelsea on Sunday, alongside Gabriel Magalhaes. That is not a crisis pairing. It is, however, a pairing with two matches of history, and it will spend Wednesday night in a stadium that specialises in making visiting defenders feel their inexperience. Cristhian Mosquera, who would otherwise be the natural deputy, sat out training on Tuesday with the muscular problem he picked up at Villa Park and is expected to miss out. |

| The compensation arrived on the training pitch. Jurrien Timber took part in full training on Tuesday and travelled with the squad, his first involvement since the Champions League final in May, when the groin injury that also cost him the Netherlands' World Cup was sustained. Arteta will not throw him into ninety minutes in Naples. Having him on the plane at all changes the shape of the bench. Napoli are not what they were in August, and they are not what they were in the spring either. Massimiliano Allegri's side have lost two of their opening Serie A matches, to Como and then 3-2 at home to Inter Milan, and they will face Arsenal without Scott McTominay, who underwent a minor planned cardiac procedure on Tuesday, and without Alessandro Buongiorno, Luca Marianucci and Giovane. Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and David Neres both missed Tuesday's session and are doubts. | | “He feels fit and confidence-wise, it is the highest I have seen him.” Mikel Arteta on Martin Odegaard |
Into that vacuum steps Kevin De Bruyne, who at 35 is set for his first start of the season and who has eight goals in 22 appearances against Arsenal, almost all of them scored in the sky blue of Manchester City and almost all of them the reason a generation of Arsenal supporters flinch when he takes a touch in the half-space. That is the key battle, and it is not the obvious one. It will not be De Bruyne against Declan Rice, who spends much of his time now in a deeper, more controlling role that Graeme Souness has taken to describing, with characteristic warmth, as old man's football. It will be De Bruyne against whichever Arsenal player occupies the space between the lines when Arsenal lose the ball high. On Sunday against Chelsea that job fell partly to Myles Lewis-Skelly, deployed as the second midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 rather than at left-back, with Riccardo Calafiori behind him. |

| The Window, Reviewed The forward Arsenal never signed, and the one they will meet on SaturdayVinicius, Rogers, Barcola, Fofana, Alvarez. Five chased, none landed. Then the club sold its two remaining Brazilians. David Ornstein's verdict is blunt, and Saturday at the Stadium of Light provides an uncomfortable illustration. David Ornstein of The Athletic has put it about as plainly as an insider of his standing tends to: Arsenal's primary summer ambition was to add an elite, prime-age attacker, and they did not do it. The list is long. Vinicius Junior was Arteta's preferred target and signed a new contract at Real Madrid instead. Morgan Rogers went to Chelsea for a reported British record £117m after Arsenal declined to go that far. Bradley Barcola was valued by Paris Saint-Germain at a figure that made the conversation academic. Yan Diomande joined Real Madrid. Julian Alvarez told Atletico Madrid's sporting director on September 1 that he was staying. The one that stings is Malick Fofana. Arsenal had agreed personal terms with the 21-year-old Belgium winger, who wanted the move; Lyon wanted €40m and would not restructure. Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano both reported Arsenal's unwillingness to meet the asking price. Fofana travelled instead to Wearside and signed for Sunderland through 2031. Arsenal play at Sunderland on Saturday evening. Sporting director Andrea Berta would argue, with some justification, that the summer was not a failure. Bruno Guimaraes at £75m is a genuine upgrade in the engine room. Ezri Konsa and Piero Hincapie were bought before Saliba's injury turned centre-back depth from a luxury into an emergency. Illan Meslier arrived free from Leeds United. And Tzolis, at £34m from Club Brugge after 17 goals and 23 assists in 36 league games in Belgium, was signed explicitly as the Trossard replacement and has started like a man who intends to be more than that. The counter-argument is arithmetic. Arsenal began the summer with Martinelli, Jesus, Trossard and Nwaneri on the books and ended it with none of them, having added one senior forward. Berta's refusal to be held to ransom is a defensible institutional posture. It is also, at the moment, a squad with Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Odegaard carrying an enormous load through a calendar that could run past 60 matches, all three of them having had surgery in the past two years. January is now the pressure point. TEAMtalk's Graeme Bailey reports Berta has held discussions around Athletic Club's Nico Williams, whose release clause sits at roughly £77m and who is said to be warmer on England than he once was. Football365 links Bournemouth's Eli Junior Kroupi, valued around £85m and currently recovering from a fractured metatarsal, as the winter contingency, with Juventus's Kenan Yildiz the ambition Arteta has not let go of. All of it is at the interest-and-conversation stage. None of it is close. |
| Martinelli gone to Al-Hilal for £60m, three days after the deadlineThe most expensive sale in Arsenal's history, completed through the loophole that lets European clubs sell after they can no longer buy. Gabriel Martinelli is an Al-Hilal player. The 25-year-old Brazil winger completed a four-year deal in Saudi Arabia late on Thursday, September 4, for a guaranteed fee widely reported in the British press at £60m, which makes him the most expensive departure Arsenal have ever sanctioned. The timing looked strange and was not. The English window shut on September 1; UEFA's rules restrict European clubs from buying after their domestic deadline, not from selling. The Saudi Pro League window remained open. Arsenal therefore had three extra days in which a bid they were willing to accept could arrive, and it did. That Arteta had left Martinelli out of the matchday squad for the opening two league fixtures was read at the time as a signal, and it was. He leaves after seven years, having made 53 appearances and scored 11 goals in the title-winning season. His unveiling video carried the line "proud to be blue, proud to be Al-Hilal," which will read oddly in N5 for a while. He joins Ollie Watkins at the club. The knock-on is a left flank thinned to the bone. Trossard to Besiktas, Martinelli to Al-Hilal, Nwaneri to Dortmund. Tzolis and Eberechi Eze are the senior options, with Noni Madueke able to switch and Max Dowman pressing from Hale End. Jesus joins Barcelona, and Arteta defends the decision to let both Brazilians goA reported £8.6m for a striker who arrived in 2022 as the signing that changed the mood at the club. Gabriel Jesus signed for Barcelona on September 1 for a fee reported at around £8.6m, closing a four-year spell that began with one of the most consequential transfers of the Arteta rebuild and ended with a serious knee injury and a place in the pecking order behind Viktor Gyokeres and Havertz. Arteta addressed both Brazilian departures on September 5, praising what Jesus and Martinelli gave the club and defending the summer's calls. His argument, in essence: Arsenal are not in the business of keeping players who will not play, and the money released is money available later. It is worth recording what Jesus was. He arrived in July 2022 for £45m from Manchester City and within a month had persuaded a fanbase that Arsenal were serious again. The trophies came after his best football. Arteta contract expected before the September break, with Rice, Odegaard and Timber advancingTEAMtalk's Graeme Bailey reports agreement on a marquee deal for the manager is anticipated by the international break, with three core renewals moving in parallel. The single most important piece of Arsenal business this autumn will not involve a transfer fee. Mikel Arteta's contract expires at the end of this season. Graeme Bailey of TEAMtalk reports that talks, which began in January and accelerated over the summer, have gone well, and that there is a growing expectation an agreement will be in place by the September international break in the last week of the month. The delay has been at the manager's request. Arteta asked the club to settle the players first. Three of those are now in motion: Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and Jurrien Timber, all currently contracted to 2028, with Timber's reported to be the most advanced of the three. Nicolo Schira adds a detail worth pausing on: Rice, he reports, turned down a substantial offer from Saudi Arabia in recent months, and Arsenal are planning an extension that would take him to 2031. Real Madrid have been monitoring. Arsenal are relaxed. Both of those things can be true at once, and usually are until they are not. The record Arteta is negotiating against is considerable: a Premier League title, an FA Cup, multiple Community Shields, a Champions League final and the best win percentage of any Arsenal manager. |

| The Rumour MillEverything simmering below the confirmed line, with the certainty of each item labelled. Treat none of this as done. ▪ Nico Williams, Athletic Club (concrete interest, reported). Graeme Bailey reports Berta has held discussions around the Spain winger, whose release clause is roughly £77m and who is described by sources as more open to England than in previous windows. Single-sourced at this stage and nowhere near a bid. ▪ Eli Junior Kroupi, Bournemouth (link). Football365 reports the 20-year-old is the January contingency if Yildiz stays out of reach. Valued around £85m, currently out after surgery on a fractured fifth metatarsal, expected back in time to be a winter option. ▪ Kenan Yildiz, Juventus (long-standing interest, no deal). Arteta is reported to be especially keen. Juventus have shown no willingness to sell. A swap involving Martinelli was floated during the summer and is now moot. ▪ Julian Alvarez, Atletico Madrid (dormant). Told Mateu Alemany on September 1 he was staying. CaughtOffside lists him among Arsenal's attacking targets for January 2027. His stated preference remains Barcelona, and Atletico chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin has been public about wanting him to stay. ▪ Andria Bartishvili, Iberia 1999 (agreement reported). The most interesting item on this list. Fabrizio Romano reported on August 29 that Arsenal have an agreement to sign the Georgian attacking midfielder when he turns 18 on March 30, 2027, on a five-year contract subject to a medical. He is on loan at Iberia from Kolkheti. Whether he arrives immediately on his birthday or in the summer of 2027 is not settled. ▪ Willian Pacho, Paris Saint-Germain (scouting only). CaughtOffside reports Arsenal and Manchester City scouts watched the centre-back in PSG's 2-2 draw with Lille. He then signed a new PSG contract to 2031. File under due diligence, not pursuit. ▪ Viktor Gyokeres (unconfirmed noise). TEAMtalk reports Arsenal would only entertain offers if a top-class replacement were secured first. Separately, Piers Morgan claimed on his show that the Swede feels disrespected after being left out of the opening two league squads while Arsenal explored using him in a deal for Alvarez. No club, manager or player response has been made. Weight accordingly: this is a pundit's claim, not a report. ▪ Mohamed Kader Meite, Al-Hilal (enquiry). TEAMtalk reports summer enquiries from Arsenal and Manchester United for the 18-year-old. Nothing advanced. |
| Fluidity, a floating captain and a back four made of spare partsArsenal have started the season pressing higher and passing more adventurously than at any point under Arteta. The question is whether the bodies last. The most striking thing about Arsenal's 2-1 win over Chelsea was not the comeback. It was the shape, or rather the refusal to hold one. Havertz, Odegaard and Saka rotated positions continuously through the first hour, and Chelsea never located a reference point. Arteta called it an incredible game to watch and to coach, and singled out the dynamics and the fluidity. Coming from a manager whose early Arsenal sides were built on positional discipline above all, that is a meaningful shift in emphasis. The numbers backed the eye. Arsenal generated 2.27 expected goals to Chelsea's 0.36 and created four big chances to none, after conceding to Morgan Rogers inside the opening minute. Havertz equalised on 27 minutes against the club he left, his third goal against them, and Odegaard finished a move involving Tzolis and Havertz five minutes after the restart. The selection detail worth watching is Myles Lewis-Skelly starting as the second midfielder alongside Rice, with Calafiori at left-back behind him. That is a genuine role change, not a one-off emergency, and it pushes Rice into the deeper, ball-progressing position that has drawn criticism from Souness and admiration from almost everybody else. It also leaves Zubimendi and Bruno Guimaraes, two of the more expensive midfielders in the league, sharing a bench. Ezri Konsa made his debut in central defence because Mosquera was unavailable, and got through it without incident, though Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young both suggested afterwards that Gabriel was fortunate not to see red. Glenn Nyberg referees in Naples, which those with long memories will connect to a contested penalty decision involving Bayern Munich. Viktor Gyokeres, meanwhile, has not started a competitive match this season. Set aside the Piers Morgan theatrics and the underlying fact remains: the man who scored 21 goals in all competitions in his debut Arsenal season, 14 of them in the league, the first Arsenal player to reach 20 in a first campaign since Alexis Sanchez in 2014-15, is watching Havertz play centre-forward. Naples, with rotation likely, is the obvious place for that to change. |
| | | Treatment Room William Saliba Back. Aggravated at the World Cup with France. No surgery. Extended rehab, reported target of late November. Cristhian Mosquera Muscular, sustained at Aston Villa on Aug 31. Missed Chelsea, sat out training Tuesday. Doubtful for Napoli. Jurrien Timber Groin, since the Champions League final in May. Completed full training Tuesday and travelled to Naples. Bruno Guimaraes Community Shield knock. Training, but on managed minutes. 30 minutes at Villa Park, unused substitute against Chelsea. Eli Junior Kroupi Not an Arsenal player, but relevant: the Bournemouth forward linked with a January move is out after surgery on a fractured metatarsal. |

| Two Manchester United recruits, a Georgian agreement and a nine-man U18sArsenal spent the last week of the window restocking the academy as aggressively as the first team, and the early results are mixed. Arsenal closed the window with a small raid on Manchester United's academy. James Scanlon, a 19-year-old attacking midfielder and winger, signed on August 29 and was given the number 63 shirt. Habeeb Ogunneye, a 20-year-old right-back, followed a day later. Two more arrived either side of them. Igor Tyjon, an 18-year-old striker, came from Blackburn Rovers on August 28, and Axel Donczew, a 16-year-old left winger, joined from Cardiff City on scholarship terms. Going the other way, Reiss Nelson left by mutual consent on August 27, ending a long association. Scanlon needed 24 minutes to justify himself, opening the scoring in the U21s' 2-2 draw at Brighton in Premier League 2 on August 31 after being found by Ife Ibrahim. Evan Mooney equalised in the 88th, set up by Zecevic John. The U21s have two points from two and travel to Chelsea on September 12. Max Dowman was absent, having been with the first team, where he was again an unused substitute against Chelsea on Sunday. The U18s are having a harder time. They lost 2-1 at Brighton on August 29, finishing with nine men after Emerson Nwaneri was sent off for a second booking in the first half and goalkeeper Jack Talbot followed late. Abraham Owusu-Gyasi had put them ahead on 61 minutes with an assist from Maalik Hashi before Daniel Rudin and Raffaele Oppong replied. That is one point from nine in the league and four matches without a win in all competitions. Earlier in August, Mikael Bonaventure Yetna rescued a Premier League Cup draw with Blackburn Rovers. One quiet piece of good news: Callan Hamill is back in training after missing the whole of pre-season injured. The 17-year-old Scotland youth international, signed from St Johnstone and now a professional, captained the U18s last season and can play right-back or centre-back. With Ogunneye arriving to occupy the right-back slot at U21 level, that versatility is about to earn its keep across three age groups plus the UEFA Youth League. And the longer game: Fabrizio Romano reported on August 29 that Arsenal have agreed terms to sign Andria Bartishvili, a Georgian attacking midfielder, when he turns 18 on March 30, 2027. He is on loan at Iberia 1999 from Kolkheti, with two goals and three assists in 20 appearances. Deals struck this far in advance are the clearest tell of a recruitment department working ahead of the market. |
| A rebuilt Arsenal win at the first attempt, and Lisa Baum announces herselfNine out, eight in, four debutants in the XI, and a nineteen-year-old settled it inside the first half at Broadfield. Renee Slegers did not so much refresh her squad as replace large parts of it. Out went Manuela Zinsberger, Laia Codina, Victoria Pelova, Rosa Kafaji, Laila Harbert, Jenna Nighswonger and Naomi Williams, plus two departures that will sting on matchdays: Beth Mead to Manchester City and Katie McCabe to Chelsea. In came eight. Georgia Stanway from Bayern Munich, Ona Batlle from Barcelona, Misa Rodriguez from Real Madrid, Geraldine Reuteler from Eintracht Frankfurt, Selina Cerci from Hoffenheim, Isabella Damm from Brondby, Lisa Baum from RB Leipzig, and on deadline day the France defender Elisa De Almeida from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported £550,000. Four of them started the WSL opener at Brighton on Sunday, and one of them won it. Baum, 19, collected the ball in the Brighton half, drove directly at the defence and finished into the roof of the net. Arsenal won 1-0 at Broadfield Stadium. Alessia Russo had two chances to make it comfortable and took neither; Fran Kirby threatened for the hosts before half-time; Rodriguez made a strong early save when Kiko Seike broke clear, and a couple more after the interval. Caitlin Foord and Chloe Kelly came on late. The statistical curio of the weekend belongs to Stanway, who became the first midfielder on record to complete more than 100 passes on a WSL debut for a club. Batlle pushed high from the left and combined repeatedly with Baum. Slegers was pleased and pointedly unsatisfied, saying afterwards the side need greater control in future matches. Second last season is the reference point they are trying to move past. De Almeida's arrival addresses a specific hole. She is a 28-year-old centre-back who can play right-back, and she is Arsenal's first specialist centre-back signing since Codina in 2023, brought in with Katie Reid still working back from an ACL injury. BBC Sport's Emma Sanders reported the deal first. Europe will be brutal. The Women's Champions League league phase draw on September 4 handed Arsenal, semi-finalists last season, a six-match schedule of OL Lyonnes at home, Barcelona away, Benfica at home, Paris FC away, HB Koge at home and Inter Milan away. The top four go straight to the quarter-finals. It starts on September 22 against HB Koge. Mariona Caldentey and Alessia Russo are both on the 30-player shortlist for the Ballon d'Or Feminin, which will be presented on October 26. Caldentey told Arseblog News last week that Arsenal were the only destination she considered when she left Barcelona. |

| Nwaneri makes an immediate case in Germany, and two loanees are at a World CupWith no senior international window this week, the away beat belongs to the loan army and to England's under-20s in Poland. Ethan Nwaneri could hardly have scripted a better opening. Sent on at Borussia Dortmund after 32 minutes when Filippo Mane was injured, the 19-year-old provided the cross for the winning goal in a 3-2 comeback against Hoffenheim. Niko Kovac said he liked what he saw and that it was what Nwaneri had been brought in for, adding that even if the goal was not officially his, he created it. Dietmar Hamann, on Sky in Germany, noted that anyone who makes a Premier League debut at 15 is an incredible talent and said he was convinced the loan would prove an excellent piece of business for BVB. Dortmund play Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday, and he may feature again. Tommy Setford made his Stevenage debut in a 5-1 win over Barnsley, conceding only a penalty and making a couple of saves. Ismeal Kabia played a fourth match for St Mirren, on the left wing, in a 2-1 defeat to Celtic, and came out of it with credit. Charles Sagoe Jr remains a regular starter at Kalmar in Sweden. On the women's side, Sophie Harwood started and played 90 minutes on her WSL2 debut for Sheffield United, who lost 1-0 to Leicester City. Two Arsenal loanees are in Poland at the FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup, which runs from September 5 to 27. Cecily Wellesley-Smith, on loan at Rosengard, started and played the full match as England drew 1-1 with Canada in their opener on September 5, Rachel Maltby equalising from the penalty spot in the 89th minute after Annabelle Chukwu had put Canada ahead. Jessie Gale, on loan at Newcastle United, came off the bench on 77 minutes and had a long-range effort drift wide. England met Tanzania on Tuesday and face Brazil on Friday. The senior international window does not open until the last week of September, which is why Arsenal are playing three matches in seven days rather than losing half a squad to airports. |
