If you read nothing else
• Bayern won 2-0 at Atlético Madrid on Tuesday through Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer, with Aaron Danks still deputising for Vincent Kompany.
• Fabio Silva's 89th-minute equaliser earned Dortmund a 2-2 draw in Munich, leaving both clubs level on 18 points at the top.
• Max Eberl says Ismael Saibari faces three to four months out after ankle surgery and Serge Gnabry will miss the rest of 2026.
The Lead
In Kompany's absence, Bayern find another gear
Twelve days after their head coach collapsed at the training ground, an injury-ravaged Bayern under Aaron Danks are unbeaten, top of the Bundesliga and fresh from their best European night of the season.
Nobody at Säbener Strasse planned for this. On Friday, October 23, Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany collapsed while watching a reserve-team session and was taken to hospital, ESPN reported. He had been fighting a viral infection that affected his legs, and had pushed through it to sit on the bench for the 2-2 draw with Arsenal two days earlier.
The diagnosis came on October 28, the day he was discharged. "It's a meningeal irritation that caused this incident on Friday," board member for sport Max Eberltold reporters. Kompany is resting and taking medication, and there is no return date. On November 2 Eberl said the recovery was going well and "there are no complications," but "it'll take a little while longer" (FCBinside).
Into the gap stepped Aaron Danks, Kompany's assistant, who had already taken training and media duties on the Tuesday before the collapse. His record since: four games, three wins, one draw, 13 goals scored and four conceded. That run includes a 3-1 win at Freiburg, a 6-1 cup rout of Magdeburg, the Klassiker and Tuesday's 2-0 at the Metropolitano.
Key facts
Kompany Collapsed Oct 23; meningeal irritation; discharged Oct 28; no return date
Danks record P4 W3 D1, goals 13-4
Bundesliga 1st, 18 pts after 8, level with Dortmund
Europe 8 pts from 4 games, unbeaten
Out Musiala, Díaz (after break); Gnabry (rest of 2026); Saibari (3 to 4 months)
The numbers flatter nobody, because the squad Danks inherited is shredded. Jamal Musiala and Luis Díaz were already out with thigh muscle injuries. Then, inside three first-half minutes against Dortmund, Ismael Saibari tore ankle ligaments in a collision with Gregor Kobel and Serge Gnabry pulled up with a hamstring problem (Bundesliga.com).
Eberl's latest timelines are stark: Saibari three to four months after surgery, Gnabry out for the rest of the year, Musiala and Díaz back only after the November international break (Yahoo Sports). Manuel Neuer missed three games with a foot tendon problem, Michael Olise played through a knock and Aleksandar Pavlović was withdrawn before kickoff in Madrid.
Three ways Danks has adapted
So how has Danks kept the machine running? The clearest answer is Alphonso Davies. With wide forwards falling, Danks pushed the Canadian from left-back to the left wing, a move he said had been a good option in recent weeks (FCBinside). Against Atlético, Davies started high on the left, with Tom Bischof deputising for Pavlović in midfield (AZ).
The second answer is Konrad Laimer. Nominally the right-back, he scored the opener against Dortmund and the clincher in Madrid, a left-footed finish into the top corner from Harry Kane's pass on 74 minutes. He was named player of the match both times. "We have great belief in our squad and in the players we have," he said (FC Bayern).
The third is the press. Tuesday's breakthrough on 54 minutes came when Lennart Karl hunted down a slow Robin Le Normand clearance and lifted the ball over Jan Oblak (Bundesliga.com). It ended Atlético's 16-game home unbeaten run against Bundesliga clubs, a record stretching back to a 1996/97 defeat to Dortmund (AZ).
"That was total domination from the first to the 93rd minute."
Manuel Neuer, after the 2-0 at Atlético
What the Klassiker still says
None of that hides the Klassiker. Bayern produced 4.83 expected goals to Dortmund's 0.70, hit the woodwork four times and saw Kane's 57th-minute penalty crash off the bar (Bundesliga.com). Silva's 89th-minute equaliser, after Konstantinos Karetsas charged down a Pavlović clearance, cost them the chance to go three points clear at the top.
The stakes now are about sequencing. Bayern have 18 points from eight league games and 8 from four in Europe, enough to sit on course for the top eight that avoids February's play-off round (AZ). One more fixture, at Mainz on Saturday, stands before an international break that should return Musiala and Díaz to training.
The danger is depth. With Saibari and Gnabry gone, Karl, Davies and Nathaniel Brown carry the wide burden, and Danks cannot rotate the way Kompany did in October. Bild reports chairman Jan-Christian Dreesen ruled out a January signing with a simple "I don't think so" (GOAL). For now, the Danks interregnum is less a stopgap than a stress test, and Bayern are passing it.
Secondary Feature
Kane's new deal is "a matter of days" away
The Ballon d'Or winner says the big points are settled on an extension to 2029. The paperwork is the last step.
Bayern are on the brink of keeping their Ballon d'Or winner. Before Tuesday's trip to Madrid, Harry Kane said a contract extension was "more a matter of days" away. "There were good talks over the weekend. I know I keep saying we're close, but now we're really extremely close," he said, adding that many of the bigger points were settled (SPORT1/SID).
His current deal runs to the end of this season. Sky Germany first reported a preliminary agreement to 2029 in early October, with salary agreed in principle and the final paperwork outstanding (GOAL). Nothing has been signed or announced by the club as of Wednesday morning, so the status remains terms agreed in principle, awaiting signature.
The timing sharpens the point. Kane was crowned the 2026 Ballon d'Or winner in London on October 26, the first Englishman to win it since Michael Owen in 2001, after scoring 73 goals for club and country last season (Sky Sports). Bayern honoured him before the Klassiker.
On the pitch the week was mixed. He missed a penalty for only the second time in 27 Bundesliga attempts, had six shots against Dortmund without hitting the target, then set up Laimer in Madrid. Mats Hummels described his deep role as "the Toni Kroos position of the centre-forward" and said Bayern need him in the box more often (LiveScore roundup).

Scouting the Next Opponent
Mainz: dangerous on the road, fragile at home
Urs Fischer's side press high and leave gaps. Bayern's patched-up attack should find them.
Mainz 05 host Bayern on Saturday ninth in the table on 10 points from eight games: three wins, one draw, four defeats, 17 goals scored and 17 conceded (ESPN). The split is stark. They have won three times away, including 5-0 at Hamburg, but taken one point from four home games (Hessenschau).
Form is poor. Mainz lost 3-2 at home to Werder Bremen, were knocked out of the DFB-Pokal in the second round by second-tier Bochum, and then lost 4-1 at Elversberg last Friday, their first league away defeat since March (Bundesliga.com). Sporting director Nico Bungert called the cup display a complete mess (Wochenblatt).
Mainz at a glance
Position 9th, 10 pts (W3 D1 L4), goals 17-17
Coach Urs Fischer, 3-3-2-2
Home form 1 point from 4 games
Last 3 L 2-3 Bremen (H), out of cup vs Bochum, L 1-4 Elversberg (A)
Watch Amiri (knee doubt), Sano, Lee Jae-sung, Tietz
Out Kohr, Silas (both until January, per FotMob)
Last meeting Mainz 3-4 Bayern, April 25, 2026
Urs Fischer, the former Union Berlin coach, plays a 3-3-2-2. Unlike his old Union sides, this Mainz team presses high and attacks quickly, but Get German Football News notes it is prone to defensive errors and leaves space behind a high line. That is exactly the territory Laimer, Davies and Karl have exploited all autumn.
The players to stop: captain Nadiem Amiri, the creative hub, who missed the Bochum tie with a knee problem; Kaishu Sano in midfield; and Lee Jae-sung, a goal threat from midfield. Up front, Phillip Tietz does the link-up work. Dominik Kohr and Silas are listed out until January (FotMob).
The last meeting, at the MEWA Arena in April, finished 4-3 to Bayern (ESPN). Bayern arrive unbeaten in 23 league games, according to Bundesliga.com. Expect Danks to weigh Neuer's minutes and Olise's knock against the international break.
Transfer News
January: the line holds, the market whispers
Bayern's bosses rule out a winter signing. Their scouts are still watching wingers.
The official line is clear. Asked about January reinforcements after the Saibari and Gnabry injuries, chairman Jan-Christian Dreesen replied, "I don't think so," Bild reported. Bayern expect everyone but Saibari back for the first game after the winter break, against Gladbach on the weekend of January 9 (GOAL, citing Bild).
The briefings beneath it are less tidy. Bild's Christian Falk wrote in October that Bayern would move only for a "perfect opportunity" that is good, available and affordable, and named a left winger to cover Luis Díaz as the most likely addition (FussballTransfers). A Bavarian Football Works piece this week says the club is quietly examining loans and early arrivals, without naming a source (Yahoo Sports). Certainty: low.
Ngumoha joins the winger shortlist
The one new name this week is Rio Ngumoha, Liverpool's 18-year-old winger. Bild reports Bayern are eyeing him as competition for Díaz, FourFourTwo relayed on Wednesday (FourFourTwo). Transfermarkt values him at 50 million euros. No bid, no talks and no comment from either club are reported.
Context matters here: Bayern lost out on Bradley Barcola in the summer partly over PSG's price, and The Athletic reported he joined Liverpool for 106 million pounds plus add-ons. Certainty on Ngumoha: rumour, single-sourced to Bild.
Olise: the extension that has gone quiet
Bild reported on September 30 that Bayern were preparing a new contract for Michael Olise to 2032, with a substantial pay rise, replacing his current deal to 2029 (Yahoo Sports/GFFN). There has been no signing or announcement since, and no fresh development this week. Status: the club's intention is reported, not agreed.
Ins and Outs
In (this week) None. The window is shut until January.
Out (this week) None.
Summer ins Nathaniel Brown (Frankfurt, 55 million euros), Ismael Saibari (PSV), Matteo Marić (Salzburg), Matouš Srb (Slavia Prague)
Summer outs Leon Goretzka (Aston Villa, free), João Palhinha (Benfica, 14 million euros), Alexander Nübel (Beşiktaş), Arijon Ibrahimović (loan, Augsburg)
Pending Kane extension to 2029 (terms agreed in principle, unsigned)
The Rumour Mill
• Ruud Nijstad (Twente, 18, centre-back): Bayern reportedly among several clubs watching, with Barcelona and Manchester United. Twente's Erik ten Hag: "There's indeed interest in him." Certainty: interest (Yahoo Sports).
• Lennart Karl (outgoing interest): Falk says he heard Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United are monitoring the 18-year-old, who is under contract to 2029. Bayern show no sign of selling. Certainty: rumour (Bulinews).
• Givairo Read (Feyenoord, 20, right-back): mentioned by Falk as a winter candidate, though Bayern are well stocked there. Certainty: speculative (FussballTransfers).
• Hiroki Ito: Falk floated a possible winter exit, which would force a centre-back replacement. Certainty: speculative (FussballTransfers).
• Summer 2027: Bild says Bayern plan at least one big-fee attacking signing next summer. No names. Certainty: club plan as reported (GOAL).
The Squad
How Danks has rebuilt the side on the fly
A winger at left-back, a full-back in the box and a teenager with something to prove.
Aaron Danks has settled on a 4-2-3-1 that bends to the injury list. Davies has become a left winger in all but name, Laimer a right-back who arrives in the box, and Bischof the holding midfielder when Pavlović is unavailable. Danks made five changes for Madrid, recalling Neuer, Tah, Stanišić, Karl and Bischof (Bundesliga.com).
Rotation was the theme of the cup tie: Kane sat on the bench for 90 minutes against Magdeburg, Kimmich was not in the squad and Neuer and Musiala were injured (FC Bayern). Danks named six changes for the Klassiker, bringing back Kane, Kimmich, Davies, Kim, Upamecano and Pavlović (Bundesliga.com).
Availability
Out Ismael Saibari (right ankle ligament surgery, 3 to 4 months); Serge Gnabry (hamstring, rest of 2026)
Back after break Jamal Musiala (thigh muscle); Luis Díaz (thigh muscle tear)
Managed Manuel Neuer (foot tendon, returned Nov 3); Michael Olise (knock, started Nov 3); Aleksandar Pavlović (pulled before kickoff in Madrid as a precaution)
Coach Vincent Kompany (meningeal irritation, recovering at home; no return date)
The Karl question
The week's sharpest debate surrounded Karl. He started on the bench against Dortmund and only came on at 85 minutes, after Olise went off. Danks pushed back: "Lennart Karl came on in the second half, so we certainly trust him in games like this. That's not a criticism of Lenny" (FCBinside).
It followed honorary president Uli Hoeneß telling WELT he planned "a serious talk" with the 18-year-old, who is "far from being a superstar." Eberl called it "a completely normal process for a young player" after an injury and a missed World Cup (GFFN). Karl answered in Madrid with the opening goal and a cupped-ears celebration.
The Campus
U19s top the table as Santos Daiber breaks through
A first senior goal, a domestic lead and a chastening night in Madrid.
The Bayern U19s lead the DFB-Nachwuchsliga with 21 points from nine games after a 3-1 win at VfB Stuttgart on Friday. Frank Egwuatu scored twice and Philipp von Taube added the other for Leonhard Haas's side, now four points clear of Stuttgart (FC Bayern).
Europe was harder. The Youth League side, coached by Dante and mixing U19 and reserve players, lost 4-1 at Atlético Madrid on Tuesday; summer signing Matouš Srb scored Bayern's goal, according to match data. Bayern went in with eight players unavailable, including Guido Della Rovere with a thigh injury (FC Bayern preview). That leaves them on four points after four games.
Bayern II threw away a 5-2 lead at the 74-minute mark and drew 5-5 at TSV Landsberg in the Regionalliga, conceding three times after the 79th minute. They sit tenth on 21 points (Bavarian Football Works via Yahoo). The U17s won the derby 2-1 against TSV 1860 and have secured first place in their preliminary group under Lars Bender.
The headline for the pathway came in the first team: David Santos Daiber scored his first senior goal in stoppage time against Magdeburg. On loan, Arijon Ibrahimović is spending the season at Augsburg, whose deal includes an 8 million euro purchase option (GFFN).
FC Bayern Women
Perfect in the league, through in the cup
Eight from eight in the Bundesliga, a cup quarter-final and a comeback against Real Madrid.
FC Bayern Women remain perfect in the Frauen-Bundesliga: eight games, eight wins, 29 goals scored and seven conceded, three points clear of Wolfsburg (FC Bayern table). José Barcala's side are the team to beat in Germany again.
On Sunday they reached the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over Leverkusen at the Campus. Pernille Harder scored from the spot on 73 minutes after Momoko Tanikawa was fouled, having earlier hit the post; Magdalena Eriksson's header was cleared off the line (match report). The quarter-final draw is on December 13.
In Europe, Bayern came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Real Madrid in Unterhaching on October 28. Athenea and Lineth Beerensteyn scored for Madrid before Edna Imade headed in a Klara Bühl corner and Tanikawa equalised from a rebound (match report). Bayern have five points from three games and have never lost in 17 home league-phase or group games.
The next week is busy: Werder Bremen at the Campus on Friday, then Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, November 10 (fixtures).
Players Away
Before the break
This week's only away action for Bayern's men was in the Champions League. The November international window follows Saturday's game at Mainz. Germany play Serbia away on Friday, November 13, and the Netherlands at home on Monday, November 16, both in the Nations League (DFB).
November squads had not been announced as of Wednesday. September's Germany selection included Brown, Tah, Gnabry, Karl, Kimmich and Musiala, with Urbig, Bischof and Pavlović in a second group (GFFN). Gnabry is now ruled out and Musiala is still rehabbing. Kane (England), Laimer (Austria) and Bayern's other internationals await their call-ups.
Numbers of the Week
4.83Bayern's expected goals against Dortmund, to 0.70, in a game they drew 2-2 (Bundesliga.com).
16Atlético's home unbeaten run against Bundesliga clubs since 1996/97, ended on Tuesday (AZ).
