Lavia, Rogers and a rare clean sheet: how Alonso steadied a lurching week

Three days after a shootout exit at Anfield and a week after Spurs won at the Bridge, Chelsea out-thought a ten-man United. The question now is whether a thinned squad can carry it to Sunderland.

For the first 45 minutes on Saturday, Chelsea looked like a team still carrying the week. Their run had read: a 2-0 home defeat to Tottenham, then a Carabao Cup exit at Liverpool on penalties. Against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge the first half was even and nervy. Then Morgan Rogers took the game away from everyone.

Five minutes after the restart Rogers picked the ball up, ran at Harry Maguire and finished a solo goal that Sports Illustrated called stunning. The assist came from Roméo Lavia, and that detail matters more than the finish. Lavia, in his best afternoon in blue, made 23 defensive contributions according to FotMob figures cited by SI.

The second goal arrived out of United's temper. Lisandro Martínez, already booked, barged Wesley Fofana at a corner and was shown a second yellow after VAR intervened, with a penalty awarded. Cole Palmer, back from a one-match ban, sent it home for his 50th Chelsea goal, as the Sutton and Croydon Guardian report noted.

Key facts

Result: Chelsea 2-0 Manchester United, Premier League, Stamford Bridge, Saturday October 31

Goals: Morgan Rogers (about 50 min), Cole Palmer (penalty)

Red card: Lisandro Martínez (Man United), second yellow

Possession: 59% to 41% · Shots: 18 to 12 (9 to 5 on target)

Expected goals: 2.67 to 1.17 (FotMob, via SI)

Table after nine games: 4th, 16 pts, W5 D1 L3, goals 19-15

The shape that worked

Xabi Alonso went 4-2-3-1 with Pedro Neto as a makeshift centre-forward because João Pedro is out with a thigh injury. Neto struggled against Maguire. The fix came from elsewhere: Lavia and Moisés Caicedo owned the middle, and Estêvão, starting at last, kept pulling Diogo Dalot wide on the right.

The numbers back the eye test. Chelsea had 59 per cent of the ball, 18 shots to 12 and an expected-goals total of 2.67 against 1.17. United produced just 0.08 xG after half-time while Chelsea built 2.39 in that period. Estêvão had two goals ruled out for offside, one by what the Guardian report described as about an inch.

“It's very important; it's the second in three Premier League games and we need many more.”

Xabi Alonso on the clean sheet

That quote is the real story. Alonso's side have scored freely all season: 19 league goals in nine games, the third-best total of the top four. They have also conceded 15, more than anyone in the top six. Against United, Mike Penders, a week after punching a Spurs corner into his own net, made the saves that mattered and kept a clean sheet.

The week that framed it

Context makes Saturday more impressive. Against Spurs on October 24, Penders' own goal in the 77th minute and a late Mathys Tel solo run handed Roberto De Zerbi's side their first win at the Bridge since 2018. Palmer was sent off for a second yellow, the first red of his career, as Alonso pointed out.

At Anfield on Wednesday Chelsea fielded something close to their strongest team. Rogers scored a penalty, Cody Gakpo levelled from the spot after Fofana raised an arm, and the shootout went to sudden death. Valentín Barco, Emmanuel Emegha and Fofana missed. Liverpool won 6-5 and Chelsea lost Maxence Lacroix to a hamstring injury before half-time.

What it means for the table

The win lifts Chelsea to fourth on 16 points, eight behind Arsenal and one ahead of Liverpool. That is the last Champions League place. With the November international break starting on the 9th, the trip to bottom club Sunderland on Sunday is the last chance to bank points before a two-week pause. Sunderland beat Chelsea twice last season.

The risk is depth. Alonso is without his captain Reece James, his first-choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, his main striker and now Lacroix. The calls he made on Saturday, trusting Lavia for 90 minutes and finally starting Estêvão, suggest he has found a midfield and a right side that work. Sunderland will test whether they work twice in eight days.

Secondary feature

Estêvão finally gets his start, and makes Alonso's point for him

Two starts in all competitions before Saturday, one unused-substitute night at Anfield, and the loudest cheer at the team announcement.

Estêvão's minutes have been the running argument of Chelsea's autumn. Before United he had started only two matches in all competitions, according to Reuters. Xabi Alonso dismissed talk of a January loan: “No discussions about that.” He also said, “I have to take the responsibility for that.”

On Saturday the 19-year-old Brazilian repeatedly beat Diogo Dalot and had two goals chalked off for offside. Reports on Monday, carried by The Chelsea Chronicle and unconfirmed by the club, suggest Alonso still wants more from him in training. The club's stance on his future is clearer: Spanish outlet AS, via FootballTransfers, reports renewal talks and a pay rise, with no sale planned despite interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

Sunderland (A), Sunday

Sunderland: bottom, stretched by Europe, and Chelsea's tormentors from last season

Le Bris's side sit 20th and have not won a league game since August 30. They also beat Chelsea home and away in 2025-26.

Sunderland have five points from nine games (one win, two draws, six defeats), with seven goals scored and 17 conceded, per the ESPN table. Their last outing was a 3-1 defeat at Coventry on Saturday. Enzo Le Fée's penalty there was their first Premier League goal since September 20, as Sky Sports noted.

Europe explains much of it. Last season's final-day win over Chelsea took Régis Le Bris's team into the Europa League, and the league phase has gone well: a home win over AZ Alkmaar, a stoppage-time win at Torreense and a 1-1 draw at Lech Poznań, per Dave Sport. They host Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday, which is why this game moved to Sunday.

Who to stop

Brian Brobbey is their leading scorer and the focal point. Le Fée is the set-piece and penalty taker. Noah Sadiki scored the late winner in Portugal, and goalkeeper Robin Roefs has kept them in games. Trai Hume, whose volley opened the scoring against Chelsea in May, is worth watching on the right.

There is one certain absence: centre-back Omar Alderete was sent off for a second yellow card in stoppage time at Coventry, so he is due to serve a one-match ban. Dan Ballard, Wilson Isidor and Thomas Meunier have all missed games this autumn; their status for Sunday was not confirmed by Monday.

Where Chelsea can hurt them

Sunderland's finishing has been the problem, and the defence has leaked under pressure. Sky's analysis had their non-penalty xG at Coventry at 0.80, slightly above the hosts, yet they lost by two. A Chelsea midfield that dominated United should be able to pin them back; the danger is the counter if Alonso's full-backs push high.

History is a warning. Sunderland won 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in October 2025 through a stoppage-time winner from Chemsdine Talbi, then won 2-1 on the final day in May 2026 to take the European place Chelsea wanted, as Flashscore reported.

Sunderland at a glance

Position: 20th, 5 pts (W1 D2 L6), goals 7-17

January planning

Koundé, Scott and the shape of Alonso's winter wish list

The window is closed until January, but the injury list is already writing the brief: a defender who can play right-back and centre-back, and a midfielder.

Jules Koundé (Barcelona): rumour, single-sourced

The loudest link of the week comes from Spain. Journalist Juan Jesus reported on October 30 that Chelsea have made Jules Koundé “their absolute priority for this winter” and told Barcelona so, as TEAMtalk relayed. The same report says Barcelona would only listen if the player asks to leave.

Koundé's contract runs to 2030 and a fee of around £45m has been mentioned, per Chelsea FC Online. The fit makes sense with Reece James out until 2027 and Maxence Lacroix injured. But no tier-one reporter has stood this up. Certainty: rumour/link.

Alex Scott (Bournemouth): concrete interest

The more developed thread is Alex Scott. talkSPORT, as reported on Yahoo Sports, says Chelsea have held fresh talks and are weighing an offer close to Bournemouth's valuation of about £100m. Earlier bids of about £60m were reportedly rejected. Scott is under contract to 2028 and currently injured. Certainty: concrete interest, not yet a bid this window.

Estêvão and Lamine Camara: one staying, one that got away

On the outgoing side, Chelsea are not selling Estêvão; AS reports renewal talks (see The Lead). The other midfield name that keeps returning is Lamine Camara. Chelsea agreed a deal of around £45m with Monaco on deadline day before Monaco pulled out, per Football365. Liverpool are now reported to be ahead. Certainty: dormant for Chelsea.

Ins & Outs

Summer ins (fees as reported): Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa, £117m), Maxence Lacroix (Crystal Palace, £52m), Marco Palestra (Atalanta, £47.9m), Geovany Quenda (Sporting, £42.7m), Valentín Barco (Strasbourg, £34m), Emmanuel Emegha (Strasbourg, £22m), Pep Chavarría (Rayo Vallecano, £16.3m), Emiliano Martínez (Aston Villa, £7.5m), Danny Welbeck (Brighton, £5m), Jordan Henderson (Brentford, free)

Summer outs: Enzo Fernández (Manchester City, £125m, a joint British record), Andrey Santos (Man United, £48m), Marc Cucurella (Real Madrid, £47.5m), Nicolas Jackson (Aston Villa, £47.5m), Liam Delap (Nottingham Forest, £45m), Trevoh Chalobah (Como, £25.7m), Tyrique George (Everton, £18m). Alejandro Garnacho went to Aston Villa on loan.

This week: no deals; the window reopens in January.

Net position: a net seller by about £32m over the summer, per a PSRwatch estimate (not an official figure)

The Rumour Mill

Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton): on Chelsea's radar, per The Pride of London. Rumour/link, single-sourced.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Real Madrid): a move would depend on Malo Gusto leaving, per The Pride of London. Treat as a lead only.

Estêvão (outgoing): PSG and Barcelona interest reported; Chelsea say no and are negotiating a new deal (AS). Not for sale.

Jules Koundé (Barcelona): see above. Rumour/link from one Spanish journalist.

Alex Scott (Bournemouth): see above. Concrete interest (talkSPORT).

The Squad
Selection and fitness

Seven senior absentees, and a midfield pairing that might be the answer

Alonso's injury list is long. His selection calls against United suggested how he plans to live with it.

The biggest blow is Reece James. Chelsea's captain had minor knee surgery after a training injury before the Bournemouth game and is expected to be out for around three months, Sky Sports News reported. Josh Acheampong has taken the right-back job and was one of the best players on the pitch against United.

In goal, Emiliano Martínez fractured his jaw and suffered a concussion in a collision with Jarrad Branthwaite at Everton on October 17, per SI. Alonso said before United he could return before the break, depending on his recovery. Mike Penders has the gloves until then.

Up front, João Pedro hurt his thigh in training before the Spurs game; Alonso said he would be out “a few weeks”, per Flashscore. He had five goals and three assists in seven games. Without him, Neto struggled through the middle.

The Lacroix question

Maxence Lacroix came off with a hamstring injury at Anfield. Alonso suggested a return after the international break. Broadcaster Ben Jacobs, citing a source, reported a grade-three tear that could keep him out until 2027, per Sports Mole. The club has given no timescale; the Jacobs report is single-sourced.

The good news: Roméo Lavia and Moisés Caicedo look like a pairing. Caicedo shook off the knock from Anfield. Cole Palmer is back from suspension, and Pep Chavarría returned from three games out. Jordan Henderson was not in the squad against United; the reason was not reported in full.

Availability for Sunderland

Reece James (knee surgery): out, around three months

Emiliano Martínez (fractured jaw, concussion): out, possible return around the break

João Pedro (thigh): out, a few weeks

Maxence Lacroix (hamstring): out, after the break at best

Jamie Gittens (ankle): out

Jorrel Hato (back): out, length of absence unknown

Aaron Anselmino: out, needs a few more weeks to be fully fit, per Alonso

Available again: Cole Palmer (ban served), Pep Chavarría, Moisés Caicedo, Malo Gusto

Sources: Alonso's press conferences as reported by Yahoo Sports and Reuters.

Under-18s stay top despite a seven-goal thriller at West Ham

Dan Hogan's side lost for the first time in six league games, but still lead the U18 Premier League South.

Chelsea's Under-18s lost 5-3 at West Ham on Saturday, their first league defeat since early September, according to FotMob and Goal's results listing. They remain top of the South section with 21 points from 10 games and a goal difference of +21, a point ahead of Tottenham, who have a game in hand.

The goals are spread around: Andrew Pennie and Heze Grimwade have seven each and Jacob Dako six. The previous three games brought wins over Reading, West Brom (5-3) and Ipswich (4-1). The next league game is at home to Arsenal on November 21.

Under-21s and the pathway

Harry Hudson's Under-21s visit Tottenham in Premier League 2 on Sunday, November 8. The clearest pathway story is at senior level: Josh Acheampong, a Cobham graduate, has made the right-back spot his own in James's absence and earned the Digest's 8 against United.

Loan watch

The club's most recent loan round-up, covering September, highlighted Genesis Antwi and Filip Jørgensen playing every minute at Strasbourg, Mamadou Sarr starting at Real Sociedad, and Ryan Kavuma-McQueen assisting at Portsmouth, per chelseafc.com. Alejandro Garnacho had made only one sub appearance for Aston Villa by then. An October round-up had not been published by Monday.

Six at The Valley, top on goal difference, and a worry over Lauren James

Bompastor's side scored four in 19 minutes at Charlton. The cost was their most creative player going off before the half-hour.

Chelsea Women won 6-0 at Charlton on Sunday. Nathalie Björn, on her first start of the season, scored after three minutes, and four goals had gone in by the 19th, per the Morning Star. Melvine Malard scored twice, Ellie Carpenter added one, and substitute Aggie Beever-Jones and Giulia Dragoni scored after the break.

The result keeps Chelsea top: level with Manchester City on 22 points but ahead on goal difference, +23 to +12. They have 27 goals in eight league games. Arsenal dropped points in a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, the one side to take points off Chelsea in the league this season.

Lauren James

The concern is Lauren James, who went off shortly before the 30th minute. “I think it's her hamstring, so we'll see what happens,” Sonia Bompastor said, per West London Sport. She was due to be assessed, with Everton and Manchester City next in the league.

Europe

In midweek Chelsea beat Roma 2-0 at Plough Lane. Carpenter, off the bench in her 50th Champions League appearance, scored on 51 minutes from Wieke Kaptein's cutback, and Kadeisha Buchanan headed in Kaptein's cross late on, per AFP. Chelsea have seven points from three games, level with Arsenal and Lyon.

Bompastor wanted more: “In these kinds of matches, if you don't kill it off, you just leave the hope for the opponent.” Next up: Everton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday (4:45 AM PT, Sky Sports in the UK), then BK Häcken in Gothenburg on Tuesday, November 10 (9:45 AM PT), and Manchester City at the Bridge on November 14.

Carpenter's milestone in Europe; the internationals start next week

With the men out of Europe this season, the week's continental action belonged to the women. Ellie Carpenter marked her 50th Women's Champions League appearance with the opener against Roma, and Kadeisha Buchanan and Wieke Kaptein were decisive in the 2-0 win.

The November international window runs from November 9 to 17, per Reuters. National squads had not been confirmed by Monday. With João Pedro, Reece James, Lacroix and Martínez injured, several regulars should stay at Cobham; next week's edition will cover the call-ups.
