Champions League preview and analysis
Carrick's Roma reckoning: one night to change the story
United are 17th and winless in nine after defeat at Stamford Bridge. Gian Piero Gasperini's unbeaten Roma arrive at Old Trafford with the head coach's future set to be weighed within a week.
The arithmetic is stark. Manchester United have taken seven points from nine Premier League games, sit 17th on goal difference alone above Crystal Palace, and have not won in nine matches in any competition. Sky Sports calls it the club's longest winless run since September 1984. Into that comes Roma, unbeaten in Serie A, on Tuesday night.
Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Chelsea followed a familiar arc. United were the better side before half-time: Matheus Cunha had a goal ruled out for offside, Bruno Fernandes skied a clear chance and Mike Penders saved twice from Amad. Five minutes after the restart Morgan Rogers ran through the middle and scored. ESPN and Sky both put the second half down to unravelling rather than bad luck.
The unravelling had a name. Lisandro Martínez, whom Sky judged at fault for the opener, was booked for fouling Rogers and then shown a second yellow after a VAR check for raising an arm to Wesley Fofana's face at a corner. Cole Palmer scored the penalty. United had 41 per cent of the ball and an expected-goals figure of 1.17, per ESPN match data.
Where the decision sits
Carrick told TNT Sports he expected to be in charge against Roma, answering simply: "Yeah." The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell, as relayed by Football365, reported that United will keep him until an assessment at the start of the November international break, after crisis talks last week. Sunday's home game with Aston Villa is the last before that break.
Fabrizio Romano went further on Monday. According to TEAMtalk, he said the feeling inside the club is that Carrick has "very good chances" of surviving, with a final call likely during the break. The away end, for its part, sang Carrick's name at full-time on Saturday, with only a smattering of boos (Sky Sports).
“I can't look into the future, you never know what's going to happen.”
Michael Carrick, Monday's pre-Roma press conference
Key facts: United v Roma
Kickoff: Tuesday, November 3, 12:00 PM PT (8:00 PM UK), Old Trafford
United form: nine without a win in all competitions (D3 L6); last win 4-0 v Sabah, 10 September
Roma form: 3rd in Serie A on 24 points, unbeaten in ten league games (W7 D3)
League phase so far: United 3 pts (W1 L2); Roma 4 pts (W1 D1 L1)
Head-to-head: eight meetings; United W5 D1 L2, including 7-1 (2007) and 6-2 (2021)
The names already being floated are big ones. Romano told DAZN that Villa's Unai Emery is "a manager they love" but "a very difficult target" (Football365). TEAMtalk reports that Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann are the two main contenders, with Nagelsmann closely behind and backed by recruitment director Christopher Vivell (TEAMtalk). Treat all of it as reporting, not process: no approach has been confirmed.
The tactical question Roma pose
The irony of Tuesday is the opponent's method. Gasperini's sides are built on aggressive, man-for-man pressing across the pitch, which is precisely what Fernandes said United should have done in Como. "It's a decision from the staff to not press man to man," he said after the 4-1 defeat there, as quoted by Sky Sports. Roma will force United to answer that argument with the ball.
Roma's likely 3-4-2-1 puts width on the wing-backs and asks the two number tens to find space between the lines. With Luke Shaw ruled out this week and Patrick Dorgu not involved after one day back in training, United have no recognised senior left-back. That flank is where Roma's right wing-back will aim, and where United's back line was stretched in the second half at Chelsea.
Martínez is available. His second-booking dismissal carries a domestic ban, not a European one, so he can play Roma but will miss Villa. Carrick said on Monday he had "no concerns about commitment at all" (full press conference). Amad's fitness after he went off at Chelsea and Marcus Rashford's day-to-day progress are the other selection questions.
What a result would change
In the Champions League, United's three points from three games left them around 20th after matchday three, inside the play-off band (league-phase table). A home win would lift them toward the top 16 with Sporting, Villarreal, Bayern and Leipzig still to come. A defeat would leave them chasing points in Lisbon on 25 November with a new coach possibly in the dugout.
Carrick chose to recall the 7-1 against Roma in 2007, in which he scored twice, as "a magical night." He needs something far smaller: a first win since 10 September, a performance that lasts 90 minutes, and a reason for the club to keep holding its nerve.
Secondary feature: the captain, the coach and the clear-the-air talks
The week before Chelsea was dominated by Bruno Fernandes. After the defeat in Como he said the decision not to press man to man was "on the manager and on the staff to see it, it's not on me" (Sky Sports). Carrick left him out against Bournemouth, calling it "pure football," and Harry Maguire captained the side (ESPN).
United lost that game 3-0 at home. Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson scored, the second after a Leny Yoro slip and the third after Senne Lammens came off his line, per NBC Sports. A "Standards" banner appeared in the Stretford End.
Carrick and Fernandes then met face to face at Carrington on Tuesday, October 27, and Sky Sports reported that the coach was satisfied the animosity was over. An all-squad meeting followed, with an acknowledgement of underperformance across the group. Fernandes started at Stamford Bridge with the armband. The relationship is repaired, for now; the results are not.

Ratings in full (out of 10)
Senne Lammens 5: Beaten by Rogers's solo run and Palmer's penalty; a full-stretch stop from Estêvão kept the score at two.
Diogo Dalot 5: Part of a back four that held through a strong first half, then came apart after the break.
Harry Maguire 5: Solid enough before half-time; could not stop the rot once Rogers broke through.
Lisandro Martínez 2: Sky Sports judged him at fault for the opener; two bookings within minutes, the second also conceding the penalty.
Leny Yoro 5: Played through the tendon problem Carrick later described; no clear error, little control either.
Amad Diallo 6: United's sharpest outlet: twice denied by Penders before going off in apparent discomfort.
Andrey Santos 5: Busy in a midfield that won the first half on territory; withdrawn after 66 minutes.
Carlos Baleba 5: Shared the screening job without imposing himself; replaced by Mainoo.
Bruno Fernandes 5: Back in the side and wearing the armband, but skied the clearest chance of the first half from Mbeumo's cross.
Matheus Cunha 6: Had a first-half goal chalked off by VAR for offside and gave the press its bite before he went off.
Bryan Mbeumo 6: Kept probing, was inches from converting a Fernandes cross and hit the bar in stoppage time off Penders's fingertips.
Kobbie Mainoo 5: Brought on as United chased the game; could not change its shape.
Ayden Heaven 5: Sent on to shore up the defence after the red card; little to defend or attack.
Mason Mount 5: Came on with United a man down and two behind; no real openings.
Scouting the Next Opponent
Roma: Gasperini's unbeaten machine
Third in Serie A, unbeaten in ten league games, and coming off a 5-2 win over Udinese.
Roma arrive in form. ESPN's Serie A table has them third on 24 points from ten games (W7 D3 L0), behind Lazio and Inter and one point ahead of Como. Their last five matches read W-W-D-W-W, per Khel Now, and they scored five at Udinese on Saturday (dave.sport).
Europe has been patchier. Roma drew 1-1 with Fenerbahçe, lost 4-3 at home to Real Madrid and then beat Slovan Bratislava 4-0, which gives them four points from three games (Paramount+ preview). Five goals conceded in three European games is the one soft spot in their numbers.
The men to stop
Donyell Malen is the danger. Signed in the summer for a reported €25m, he has three Champions League goals, per Paramount+, and leads Roma's scoring. Khel Now's predicted XI has Matías Soulé and Rodrigo Mora as the two tens in a 3-4-2-1, with Nahuel Molina and Wesley as wing-backs.
Roma have absentees of their own. Goalkeeper Mile Svilar and midfielder Manu Koné are out, and Khel Now also lists Lorenzo Pellegrini; Pierluigi Gollini is expected in goal. Paulo Dybala's availability is uncertain after a return to training.
Where United can hurt them
Gasperini's man-marking leaves space behind when a press is beaten. United's best moments at Chelsea came from quick wide combinations involving Amad and Mbeumo, and with Svilar out, testing Gollini early makes sense. The history is kind too: United have won five of the eight meetings, losing two and drawing one.
Roma at a glance
Manager: Gian Piero Gasperini; system 3-4-2-1
Serie A: 3rd, 24 pts from 10 (W7 D3 L0)
Champions League: D 1-1 Fenerbahçe, L 3-4 Real Madrid, W 4-0 Slovan Bratislava
Head-to-head: United W5 D1 L2; last meeting a 3-2 Roma win in the 2021 Europa League semi-final second leg
Transfer News
The Martínez standoff
A contract that runs out next summer, a row with the hierarchy and now a red card. Talks are due.
Lisandro Martínez's deal at Manchester United runs to June 2027, with a club option for a further year. Renewal talks were paused in mid-October after he criticised the club's hierarchy following the defeat in Madrid, according to Football Insider as reported by The Hard Tackle.
On Monday Fabrizio Romano said "there will be direct contacts between Lisandro Martínez's camp and Manchester United" (CaughtOffside). Carrick, asked about the contract, said the club would let people know "when anything's finalised." Certainty: talks expected (Romano). A claim from the fan site utdreport that he has agreed terms with Atlético for 2027 is unconfirmed and single-sourced.
The striker gap
Benjamin Šeško is expected to be out until at least January with a shin problem that first flared after a collision late last season, The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell reported on October 28 (via The Peoples Person). With Rasmus Højlund sold to Napoli in the summer, Joshua Zirkzee is the only other senior centre-forward.
That makes January a striker window whoever is in charge. FootballTransfers and TEAMtalk report that Folarin Balogun has been offered to United and other clubs (LiveScore round-up). Certainty: player offered, no confirmed interest.
The captain's contract
Bruno Fernandes's renewal talks have stalled, and Sports Witness reports that Al-Hilal are ready to offer about €55m in January. Carrick said there was "nothing any further to update" on either his or Martínez's contract. Certainty: rumour, single-sourced. TEAMtalk adds that few bidders outside Saudi Arabia would pay £60m.
Alejandro Balde (Barcelona): CaughtOffside says United are considering a January loan for the left-back. With Shaw injured and Dorgu just back, the need is real. Rumour.
Lennart Karl (Bayern Munich): CaughtOffside reports an enquiry for the 18-year-old, whom Bayern value at €60m and want to keep. Rumour; early interest at most.
JJ Gabriel (outgoing): Real Madrid are growing confident of signing the 16-year-old academy forward, per TEAMtalk via CaughtOffside. More in Carrington below. Concrete interest, multiple clubs.
The dugout: Emery, Howe, Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte have all been linked with Carrick's job. Romano calls Emery a "very difficult target" because Villa want him to stay. Speculation; no approach confirmed.
The Squad
Availability: no left-back, no Šeško, questions over Amad
Carrick's options are thinning at the worst moment.
Carrick's Monday update was blunt. "Luke definitely won't be around this week," he said of Luke Shaw. Patrick Dorgu, back in training on Monday after a hamstring injury picked up with Denmark in September, "won't be involved tomorrow" (The Peoples Person).
Leny Yoro is managing a tendon issue that Carrick said "comes and goes." Marcus Rashford, who returned from his Barcelona loan in the summer, missed training and will be assessed "day by day." Amad went off at Chelsea in apparent discomfort and is a doubt, per dave.sport.
Availability for Roma
Out: Benjamin Šeško (shin, until at least January); Luke Shaw (this week)
Not involved: Patrick Dorgu (first day back in training)
Doubtful: Marcus Rashford (day by day); Amad (knock at Chelsea)
Managing: Leny Yoro (tendon)
Suspended domestically: Lisandro Martínez misses Aston Villa; available for Roma
Selection and shape
At Chelsea United lined up 4-2-3-1 with Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba as the pair in front of the defence, Fernandes behind Mbeumo and Cunha and Amad wide. The two summer midfielders were both withdrawn, Baleba for Kobbie Mainoo and Santos for Ayden Heaven. How Carrick balances legs and control in midfield against Roma's press is the call to watch.
The deeper problem is late-game control. United were the better side in the first half at Stamford Bridge and still lost; against Bournemouth they conceded twice in four first-half minutes. Gary Neville said on Sky Sports that United are "stuck in a rut" (LiveScore round-up).
The captaincy
Maguire wore the armband against Bournemouth; Fernandes took it back at Chelsea after the clear-the-air meeting. Mainoo sat alongside Carrick at Monday's press conference.
Carrington
JJ Gabriel and the fight to keep Carrington's best
The academy's brightest teenager wants out, and Spain's giants are circling.
JJ Gabriel, 16, formally asked to leave Manchester United in September, and the club has so far failed to change his mind, according to TEAMtalk as relayed by CaughtOffside on November 1. Real Madrid are said to be increasingly confident after positive talks with his camp; Barcelona, PSG and Bayern have also been linked.
Fabrizio Romano put the odds bluntly last month: "95% is for JJ Gabriel to go," probably to La Liga (Yahoo Sports). Any move is subject to FIFA rules on young players, and reports point at a deal around the January window. Certainty: concrete interest; nothing agreed.
Graduates and debutants
Shea Lacey scored in the 3-2 EFL Cup defeat by Brighton in September, the season's clearest first-team academy moment so far. Ayden Heaven came off the bench at Stamford Bridge. Tynan Thompson, signed from Tottenham in July, was in England's under-19 squad in September.
Loan watch
André Onana's Trabzonspor won their last three Süper Lig games, beating Gaziantep 2-0 on Sunday, Rizespor 4-3 and Beşiktaş 2-0, per his ESPN match log. Chido Obi is on loan at Willem II in the Eredivisie, Altay Bayındır at Celta Vigo and Dan Gore at Luton.
Detailed weekend performances for the wider group of loanees (Ethan Wheatley at Lincoln, Jack Moorhouse at Dundee, Jacob Devaney at Hibernian and others) could not be verified this week, so they are not graded here.
United Women
Olid's side stall at Everton but stay in the hunt
Unbeaten in ten since mid-September, fourth in the WSL and through four cup games with four wins.
Manchester United Women drew 0-0 at Everton on Saturday, and head coach Eva Olid did not hide her frustration. "For me it was a bad match," she said, adding that "we need to have a conversation because this cannot happen" (Yahoo Sports).
The context is better than the mood. United are fourth in the WSL, one place off the Champions League spots and four points behind London City Lionesses, who have a game in hand. They had gone nine games unbeaten since the 5-0 defeat by Chelsea on September 13 before Saturday's draw, per The Peoples Person.
Cup run and returns
Wednesday's 3-0 Players' Cup win over Burnley made it four from four in the competition (The Peoples Person). Ellen Wangerheim scored her first goal for the club and Lea Schüller added two.
Jayde Riviere returned from injury and Celin Bizet made her first appearance since giving birth earlier this year, two welcome additions to a squad reshaped in the summer under Olid, who replaced Marc Skinner in August (season record).
Next up
United visit Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday, November 8, at 12:00 PM UK time (4:00 AM Pacific), then host Crystal Palace on November 14 (fixture list).
Players Away
European nights and a break that could decide everything
This week's away duty is European. Manchester United host Roma on Tuesday in the Champions League, and the November international window opens after Sunday's Villa game.
England name their squads on Friday, November 6 (England Football). Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford were in the senior squad in September; Rashford's fitness makes his place uncertain. England host Croatia at Wembley on November 12 and visit Spain on November 15 in the Nations League.
Dorgu's hamstring injury came on Denmark duty against Wales in September (Evening Standard via AOL), a reminder of what international weeks can cost. Among the loanees, Onana kept a clean sheet in Trabzonspor's 2-0 win over Gaziantep on Sunday.
Off the Pitch
Boardroom pressure and the cost of a bad season
The chants at Stamford Bridge were aimed upward rather than at the bench: at Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazers, per AOL. BBC Sport sources, as reported by The Peoples Person, have suggested Ratcliffe could be considering a wider overhaul of senior staff. Anonymous sourcing; nothing confirmed.
The money explains the nerves. An analysis of the club's filings by The ESK puts 2025-26 revenue at £677.6m and notes that lenders require adjusted EBITDA of at least £125m over every rolling 12 months. The same analysis says adidas can halve its payment in any season United spend outside the Premier League.
Relegation is not the base case for anyone. But a club this indebted cannot afford a long stay in the bottom half, which is why the Roma and Villa results matter beyond the dugout.
Numbers of the Week
9
Matches without a win in all competitions (D3 L6), United's longest such run since September 1984, per Sky Sports.
7
Premier League points from nine games, which leaves United 17th, ahead of Crystal Palace only on goal difference.
1.17
United's expected goals at Stamford Bridge, on 41 per cent possession (ESPN).
1973-74
The last season before this one in which United failed to win any of their first seven away games (Sky Sports).
In Brief
Solskjær stays out of it. Ole Gunnar Solskjær would not rule out a return but backed Carrick, calling his talks with club chiefs a "small chat" (FootballTransfers via LiveScore).
Keane on Martínez. Roy Keane said the Argentine should improve his own performances before criticising others, after the Chelsea red card (GiveMeSport via LiveScore).
Fabregas's regret. Como's coach admitted telling his players to ease off at 4-0 in the 4-1 win over United on October 21, and said afterwards he regretted it (GOAL via LiveScore).
Villa date set. Sunday's home game with Aston Villa kicks off at 4:30 PM UK time and is live on Sky Sports in Britain (My Old Man Said).
Mainoo front and centre. Kobbie Mainoo joined Carrick for the Roma press conference, where Carrick said the dressing room is "in a good place" (Football Italia).
