The Lead
Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund meet on Saturday tied on points, both unbeaten, and separated by almost nothing except the way they score. The one certainty is that Vincent Kompany will not be in the dugout.
There is a version of this fixture that arrives every autumn as a formality, Bayern a dozen points clear and Dortmund playing for third. This is not that version. After seven matchdays the two clubs are identical on the only line that matters: played seven, won five, drawn two, lost none, seventeen points. They are the only unbeaten teams left in Germany. Saturday at the Allianz Arena is first against second in the literal sense.
What separates them is style, and the gap there is enormous. Bayern have scored 25 goals, more than anyone in the division and five more than the next best. Dortmund have scored 12, a total that eight other clubs have bettered, and have conceded four. Four, in seven games. Nobody in Germany has conceded fewer, and only Bayern, on six, are anywhere near.
So the match has an unusually clean shape to it. Bayern are a team that overwhelms; Dortmund are a team that refuses. One of those propositions is going to look foolish by Saturday evening.
Bayern's week has not been about football. On Friday 23 October, Vincent Kompany collapsed while watching the club's second team train and was taken to hospital. He had been unwell for some time, carrying a viral infection that affected his legs, sitting through the 6-1 league win over RB Leipzig on 17 October and missing training and a press conference in the days before.
He was discharged on Wednesday 28 October. Sporting director Max Eberl told ARD that the diagnosis was an irritation of the meninges, the membranes around the brain and spinal cord, and that it had caused the collapse. Eberl was careful to separate it from the job. "This is a condition that could strike any one of us," he said. "This has nothing to do with the pressure associated with the Bundesliga."
Kompany will not be at the Klassiker. He is not on the bench and, by the club's account, is being kept away from football conversations entirely. Assistant Aaron Danks takes the team, as he did for the 3-1 win at Freiburg and the 6-1 cup win over Magdeburg. Danks has been pointedly undramatic about it. "No big changes, no big differences for us," he said on Friday. "We want the players to go out and show who they are."
Monday night in London, Harry Kane won the Ballon d'Or. He beat Kylian Mbappe into second and Lamine Yamal into third, and he mentioned Kompany from the stage. Kompany had phoned him that morning to wish him luck. Kane has four league goals this season, fewer than you might expect from a Ballon d'Or winner, because Bayern's goals are spread everywhere: Michael Olise has six, Luis Diaz four, and the 3-1 at Freiburg included Serge Gnabry's 100th Bundesliga goal and an Olise winner in stoppage time.
Dortmund's attack is one man and a prayer. Serhou Guirassy has seven goals in all competitions, and Bundesliga's own preview has framed Saturday as Kane against Guirassy. The supporting evidence is thinner. Against Eintracht Frankfurt last Saturday, Dortmund took 18 shots, Guirassy missed two clear chances, and the game was settled on 80 minutes by Maximilian Beier off a Jobe Bellingham pass. Three days later, 2-0 up on Werder Bremen in the cup, they were pegged back to 2-2 by a Niclas Fullkrug brace and rescued by a Marcel Sabitzer free kick in stoppage time.
That is the Dortmund pattern under Niko Kovac, whose contract was extended to June 2029 earlier this month, two years ahead of schedule. They do not score early and they do not concede. They win late. It is not thrilling and it has them level with Bayern.
Bayern are without Manuel Neuer, whose foot injury is still painful enough that Danks ruled him out on Friday, leaving Jonas Urbig in goal. Jamal Musiala has not returned to full training since the September international break. Luis Diaz is out too. Joshua Kimmich has resumed individual training following the death of his father and may feature. "Life is different for him now and we don't need to hide that," Eberl said.
Dortmund are missing Emre Can and Giannis Konstantelias, both with knee problems. Konstantinos Karetsas, injured at Union Berlin in mid October, trained partly with the squad on Thursday and will be assessed. Kovac said the side that played the last match is otherwise fit.
Dortmund have not beaten Bayern since March 2024. Club adviser Matthias Sammer was asked about Saturday and gave an answer that sounded less like a prediction than a confession: Bayern alone, he told Sky, will decide whether they win this game. It drew criticism in Germany as defeatism from a man who used to embody the opposite.
There is a counter-argument, and it is sitting in the Bayern treatment room. A side missing its goalkeeper, its most creative attacker and its manager is a side playing on structure and habit. Dortmund's entire season has been built on being the team that is still standing at minute 85. If they are ever going to end the run, a week like this one is the week.

The Derby della Madonnina lands on Saturday night with Inter joint top but short of bodies, Milan beaten at home for the first time, and Lazio refusing to go away.
Serie A has produced the most unusual table in Europe. Inter and Lazio are tied on 25 points from nine games with identical goal differences of plus 15. Roma are third on 21, also plus 15, and have not lost. Como, under Cesc Fabregas, are fourth on 20. Napoli and Juventus are seventh and eighth on 14. The two leading scorers in the division play for Frosinone and Monza.
Into that, Saturday at 12:45pm Pacific, comes the derby. AC Milan arrive off their first league defeat of the season, 4-2 at home to Bologna on Wednesday, in which Samuel Mbangula scored a hat-trick and Fikayo Tomori went off injured at the start of the second half. Milan conceded twice within two minutes of losing him. Tomori has a hamstring lesion and manager Ruben Amorim said on Friday he is out for at least a month.
Inter's problem is sharper. Lautaro Martinez has a left hamstring injury and will not play again until after the November international break. John Stones, Benjamin Pavard, Curtis Jones and Luis Henrique are also out. "I am limited by injuries and some need to rest occasionally," Cristian Chivu said on Friday. "I have few of them."
Chivu also offered the derby's standard disclaimer, and meant it more than most managers do: the table does not count, nothing counts, there are no favourites in derbies. Amorim's counter was that at Milan you always have to talk about the Scudetto as the objective. Both men are partly right, which is the point of a derby in the tenth round of a title race nobody can yet read.

Transfer News
The Ballon d'Or winner's contract expires at the end of this season. Bayern's chief executive says the hard part was settled before the ceremony.
The most consequential piece of contract business in European football is being conducted almost in public. Harry Kane's Bayern deal runs out at the end of 2026-27. On Wednesday 28 October, after the 6-1 cup win over Magdeburg, chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen spoke to Kicker in terms that left very little room.
"We had already discussed and negotiated all the important issues before the Ballon d'Or ceremony," Dreesen said. The remaining work is detail, which "simply takes a few days." And then the line that matters: "But we both know that we want to extend this arrangement for as long as possible." Dreesen described repeated conversations with Kane's father and brother.
Certainty: personal terms agreed in substance, not signed and not announced. Nothing has been filed and Bayern have made no formal statement. Dreesen is the club's chief executive speaking on the record to Germany's most authoritative football title, which is about as strong as an unannounced deal gets, but it is not an announcement.
The timing is not accidental. Kane won the Ballon d'Or in London on Monday 26 October, ahead of Mbappe and Lamine Yamal, and also took the Gerd Muller award. A player who has just been named the best in the world and whose contract expires in eight months is, in theory, the most available footballer alive. Bayern appear to have closed that window before it opened.
A renewal to 2031 confirmed on Friday, and an owner saying out loud that the summer window left the squad short.
AC Milan announced on Friday 30 October that Christian Pulisic has extended his contract to 30 June 2031. The club cited 44 goals in 141 appearances since July 2023 and framed the renewal as confirming a shared path. Tuttomercatoweb's Simone Lorini had the financial terms in advance, reporting a salary of 6.5 million euros net per season, a figure that does not appear in the club statement.
Certainty: OFFICIAL. Announced by the club and carried by the ANSA wire.
The renewal landed the same day Gerry Cardinale, whose RedBird Capital owns the club, gave a long interview conceding that the summer had fallen short. "We have to keep improving the squad because in the summer I did not manage to do everything I wanted," he said, promising high-level reinforcements in January.
The names being worked on, per Tuttomercatoweb and Gazzetta dello Sport, are mostly defenders, which is what you would expect from a club that just lost its best centre-back for a month. Goncalo Inacio of Sporting is described as the front-runner. Tiago Gabriel at Lecce is a longer-standing target. Kim Min-jae is said to be open to a Serie A return from Bayern. Further forward, Endrick is considered a possible loan from Real Madrid, with Roma also interested. Alex Scott of Bournemouth is on the list but a reported 100 million euro valuation makes January unrealistic.
Certainty: concrete interest, no bids reported. Cardinale's quote is on the record; the target list is reporting, not confirmation.
Milan also published their 2025-26 accounts on Thursday: revenue of 464.6 million euros, a net loss of around 24 million, sponsorship above 100 million, and average attendance over 72,000 despite a season with no European football. Chairman Paolo Scaroni called the figures evidence of "the resilience of our business model in a challenging season."
Four key players are out of contract in 2028. Bild's BVB correspondent has laid out the order, and it says something about how the club values its only reliable scorer.
Four of Borussia Dortmund's most important players run out of contract in summer 2028: goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, full-back Julian Ryerson, centre-back Waldemar Anton and striker Serhou Guirassy. On Friday, Bild's Dortmund correspondent Sebastian Wessling set out the club's priority order on the paper's "Dortmund Insider" podcast.
Anton is first, with talks already under way. Kobel is second, and the club would ideally like him signed this calendar year. Ryerson follows. Guirassy is last, and talks are not expected to start before spring 2027. Wessling's phrasing was that Guirassy "is not quite at the front of the queue," which for a player with seven goals and two assists this season is a pointed piece of information.
Certainty: advanced talks for Anton, stated intent for Kobel, deliberate deferral for Guirassy. Sky Germany first reported the Anton negotiations on 8 October. Manchester United have been linked with Anton, which is at the rumour tier and has no reported bid behind it.
Elsewhere in Germany, Borussia Monchengladbach are negotiating an extension beyond 2028 for Wael Mohya, the 17-year-old who scored and assisted in last Friday's 3-2 win at Stuttgart, the club's first win of the season. Sky Germany reports the new terms would roughly double his salary to around 2 million euros a year. Head of sport Rouven Schroder was unrestrained: "The way he dribbles forward, the audacity with which he sets up the goal. Hats off." Certainty: advanced talks.
Stanislav Lobotka's injury has reshaped Napoli's January, and their main attacking target is sitting in the relegation zone.
Napoli lost Stanislav Lobotka to a joint and ligament injury in Wednesday's 4-1 win at Monza. Corriere dello Sport puts him out for roughly six weeks, back in December, missing Juventus on Sunday, Porto in the Champions League and Lazio. The paper expects Kevin De Bruyne to drop into the deep playmaking role alongside Gilmour and Anguissa. Tuttosport gives a slightly longer estimate of five to seven weeks.
The knock-on is a January window that now needs a midfielder as well as a forward. Nicolo Schira reported on Friday that Napoli are "ready to pounce" for Gustavo Varela of Monza, calling him their main target for January. Varela has eight goals, joint top of Serie A alongside Frosinone's Antonio Raimondo. Schira set out two scenarios: sign him now and leave him at Monza until June, or bring him in immediately. The conditions are that Napoli move players out, find a loan for Lucca, and that Monza's league position does not harden into a relegation fight. Monza are 16th.
Certainty: concrete interest, named reporter, no bid. A separate Portuguese report claims an offer is ready and that Benfica hold a sell-on percentage; that is single-sourced and should be treated as unconfirmed.
Il Mattino reports Napoli plan three January signings, one per department, with the forward as cover for Hojlund. The specifics vary between outlets and are low confidence.
Everything still simmering, with the certainty on each one labelled. The window does not open for two months, which is exactly when the groundwork gets done.
Antonio Conte and the English question. The most interesting line of the week came from Nicolo Schira on Thursday. Conte, he reported, is in Sharm el-Sheikh fielding calls and appears inclined to wait until next season before taking a Serie A job. But, Schira wrote, "it is a different conversation for an English club (Manchester United), where it would take less time to rebuild." Conte himself said on Instagram that there are no negotiations at an advanced stage. With Michael Carrick's position at Old Trafford confirmed only as far as Saturday, that is a thread worth watching. Rumour, well sourced.
Jacobo Ramon back to Real Madrid. Matteo Moretto, speaking on DAZN Espana on Thursday, said Real Madrid will execute the buyback clause on Jacobo Ramon, the academy-raised centre-back now at Como, for under 9 million euros. Timing and role are not settled. Ramon scored against Manchester United in the Champions League nine days ago. Concrete, stated club intent.
Haaland and Spain. Moretto again, on Marca's programme this week: Erling Haaland "dreams of playing in LaLiga and is expected to end up in Spain sooner or later." No club named. His Manchester City contract runs to June 2034. Rumour and mood music, nothing more.
Igor Paixao wants out of Marseille. Mohamed Toubache-Ter reports that the Brazilian winger wants a January move and that his representatives have reopened talks with Sunderland. He nearly left in the summer before Bruno Genesio insisted he stay and owner Frank McCourt pulled back. No bid or fee reported. Concrete interest, single-sourced. The same report has Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg wanting to leave with no suitor named, which is weaker still.
Atletico's striker hunt. Atletico Madrid are reported to want another forward in January, with Victor Osimhen of Galatasaray the name attached and a figure around 70 million euros mooted. No originating reporter is cited and Galatasaray are described as reluctant. Separately, Lisandro Martinez of Manchester United is linked, his contract running to June 2027 and therefore open to foreign negotiation from January. Both rumour tier, aggregator-sourced. Treat accordingly.
Kvaratskhelia's new deal. RMC Sport's Fabrice Hawkins reports Paris Saint-Germain are in talks over a new five-year contract for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament in the 4-2 win over Barcelona on 20 October and faces surgery. PSG also want to extend 19-year-old Quentin Ndjantou and hand a first professional deal to 17-year-old David Boly. Advanced talks.
A contradiction worth flagging. On 28 October Foot Mercato reported PSG's interest in Leverkusen's Ibrahim Maza was firming up. On 29 October RMC Sport reported PSG will not pursue him this winter, while remaining open to a January signing at a sensible price. Two reputable French outlets, one day apart, in direct opposition. Unresolved.
Frankfurt's boardroom. Eintracht Frankfurt have been without a sporting director since Markus Krosche's departure on 18 October. Florian Plettenberg reports the shortlist is down to two: Joti Chatzialexiou of Nurnberg and Marcel Schafer, RB Leipzig's managing director for sport. Hessischer Rundfunk says Chatzialexiou leads. Nurnberg said as of Wednesday they had received no approach. Advanced talks, no formal approach confirmed.
And one to discount. A widely circulated post claiming a completed "here we go" on a Tottenham to Atletico deal could not be dated and appears to describe business already concluded. We have left it out rather than recycle it.

Around the Leagues
A title race that has barely moved, a Manchester United collapse that keeps moving, and a weekend that could reshape both.
Matchweek nine broke the pattern at the top. Aston Villa beat Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday, City's second defeat of the season and enough to drop them from first to second. Liverpool beat Brighton 2-0 at Anfield to move third on 18 points, their best run of the Andoni Iraola era, which is a sentence that would have read strangely in May. Brighton remain the league's most entertaining proposition: 23 goals scored, more than anyone, and a goal difference of plus 14 that is the best in the division despite sitting fourth.
Below that, the table is compressed to the point of absurdity. Seven clubs sit between 11 and 12 points. Brentford have drawn six of nine. Leeds United have also drawn six of nine, including a goalless Sunday at Sunderland that did neither club much good. Tottenham won 2-0 at Chelsea, a result that says as much about Xabi Alonso's first months at Stamford Bridge as about Spurs: Chelsea have scored 17 and conceded 17 in nine games and are seventh.
The hard numbers first. Manchester United have taken seven points from nine Premier League games. One win, four draws, four defeats. They are 17th, above Crystal Palace only on goal difference, and below Nottingham Forest. The single league win was 5-2 against Ipswich on 30 August, two months ago.
Sunday's 0-3 home defeat to Bournemouth came four days after a 4-1 loss at Como in the Champions League, after which Michael Carrick opened his press conference by apologising to the supporters and called the performance unacceptable. United are also out of the Carabao Cup, beaten 3-2 at home by Brighton in September, and have lost two of three in Europe.
Wayne Rooney said this week that the club are "a million miles away." Gary Neville said he was surprised, and pleased, that Carrick is staying. Reports describe clear-the-air talks between Carrick and Bruno Fernandes, after the captain's post-Como comments about the pressing instructions drew a public correction from his manager. What the club has not done is say anything about Carrick beyond confirming he takes the team to Chelsea on Saturday. That is a specific and limited form of backing.
Chelsea against Manchester United opens Saturday at 5:30am Pacific. Manchester City host Brighton at 8:00am, second against fourth and arguably the better football match. Sunday brings Liverpool against Arsenal at Anfield at 8:30am, with the visitors top of the table, and Monday night has Newcastle against Everton. Newcastle, under Matthias Jaissle since August, have won four and lost three and have a goal difference of exactly zero, which may be the most Newcastle statistic available.
At the bottom, Coventry City have lost seven of nine on their return to the top flight and host Sunderland in what is already a six-pointer in October. Crystal Palace have conceded 21 goals and lost six. Scoring charts: Erling Haaland leads with nine, Alexander Isak has six for Liverpool.

Mbappe won the Clasico and then lost two sponsors. Barcelona are down to four fit defenders. Atletico have quietly won six in a row.
The football first. Barcelona lost 2-1 to Real Madrid at Camp Nou on Sunday 25 October, Kylian Mbappe scoring in the 41st minute and again in the 87th, with Raphinha equalising in between. The winner was Mbappe's 100th goal for Real Madrid, and it came from a Jude Bellingham turn and a Camavinga pass. It was Jose Mourinho's first Clasico win since returning to the club in June.
The refereeing committee then published its weekly review and conceded an error: Joao Cancelo's 56th-minute challenge on Diomande should have been a yellow card. It explicitly rejected the red that Madrid had demanded, and it backed referee Juan Martinez Munuera on the Balde handball that Madrid also protested. Barcelona lead Atletico Madrid by two points and Real Madrid by three. Atletico have won six league games in a row and sit between them.
On Monday a clip filmed in April circulated in which Mbappe, asked about the funniest meme he had seen of himself, described it as putting his face on "some guy, I think he's a Chinese dictator." He did not name Mao Zedong. The reaction was immediate and severe. Dongpeng Beverage terminated his contract with immediate effect, saying it "firmly opposes and has a zero-tolerance policy towards any behaviour that offends national sentiments." Mengniu, China's largest dairy company, also cut ties. Xiaohongshu froze his account. Weibo barred new follows. State television halted broadcasts of LaLiga matches and of events involving Mbappe.
Mbappe apologised on Tuesday in French, Mandarin and English: "My comment was ill-judged and I now understand that it hurt many people in China." LaLiga apologised the same day, president Javier Tebas meeting China's ambassador to Spain and saying "China is and will continue to be a strategic partner for LaLiga." Real Madrid issued their own apology on Wednesday. On Wednesday foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Beijing takes the apology seriously. Roughly 45 percent of LaLiga's television income comes from abroad, which is the commercial context for how fast everyone moved.
Espanyol sacked Manolo Gonzalez on Wednesday and appointed Eder Sarabia to June 2028. They are 18th on eight points and went out of the Copa del Rey at Sestao River, 4-3 after extra time. Sarabia's first match is at Villarreal on Friday night. Barcelona's defence has collapsed into a crisis: Hansi Flick confirmed on Friday that Kounde, Xavi Espart, Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen are all out, leaving four senior defenders, and he has been training academy players and considering Frenkie de Jong at centre-back. "We are missing four players in defence and it is not easy to manage," he said.
Vinicius Junior is serving a four-match ban after a red card against Villarreal and missed the Clasico; he misses Sunday at Racing Santander too. The abandoned Rayo Vallecano against Athletic Club match, stopped on 10 October after a supporter protest against president Martin Presa, will be completed on Wednesday 9 December behind closed doors, resuming from the 24th minute at 0-0, with Rayo also covering Athletic's travel costs.

Beyond the Klassiker: a cup round that removed seven top-flight clubs, a 250 million euro investment in Bayern, and the slow reopening of the 50+1 question.
The DFB-Pokal second round on 27 and 28 October was carnage for the top division. Stuttgart lost 1-0 at Paderborn. Schalke lost 2-0 at Dynamo Dresden. Hoffenheim went out on penalties at Holstein Kiel. Hamburg, Union Berlin, Werder Bremen and Elversberg fell too, seven top-flight clubs in all. 1. FC Koln hammered Union 5-0, with 20-year-old Said El Mala scoring twice and setting up another. The round-of-16 ties are on 1 and 2 December.
The weekend before, Niclas Fullkrug scored twice from the spot in Werder's 3-2 win at Mainz and now has eight league goals in seven games, the division's leading scorer and a tally only Rudi Voller has matched for Bremen at this stage. Hoffenheim beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 to end a Leverkusen winning run that stretched across all competitions, the winning penalty coming after a VAR review and 35-year-old Andrej Kramaric scoring the club's 1,000th Bundesliga goal before being sent off for removing his shirt in celebration.
Off the pitch, Bayern confirmed an investment from the Viessmann Generations Group reported at around 250 million euros, structured as a capital increase rather than a share sale. Viessmann will hold just under 6.7 percent; the members' association drops from 75 to its statutory floor of 70 percent, with Adidas, Audi and Allianz each diluted to just under 7.8. Separately, the Bundesliga executive committee set a timetable on the 50+1 ownership rule: a December membership vote to reaffirm it as a principle, then final proposals on uniform application in the first half of 2027. The federal competition authority closed its own examination in August without fundamental objection, but required consistent application.
RB Leipzig remain the league's strangest team, perfect at home in the Bundesliga and the Champions League and beaten in every away game in both. Martin Demichelis is still in post, backed by a hierarchy whose managing director for sport is himself on Frankfurt's shortlist.
A midweek round, a Lazio demolition, a two-match ban for Allegri, a manager under siege in Turin, and a new San Siro with a name.
Serie A played a full midweek round from Tuesday to Thursday. The headline was Lazio's 6-2 at Sassuolo: four goals inside the opening quarter of an hour, two Lazio penalties missed, a Sassuolo red card on 31 minutes, and a first Serie A goal for Romano Floriani Mussolini. Gennaro Gattuso's response was characteristic: "We must not look at the table, otherwise we will get a headache."
Juventus lost 2-0 at Genoa on Wednesday, beaten by Daniele De Rossi, who then embraced his mentor Luciano Spalletti at the whistle. Corriere dello Sport reports the club is backing Spalletti for now, with a direct meeting between chief executive and squad and a two-day training camp before Napoli on Sunday, while naming Stefano Pioli as the leading alternative. Juventus are eighth on 14 points with a goal difference of plus one. Sunday at 11:45am Pacific is being framed in Italy as decisive.
The other Turin storm is Neapolitan. Massimiliano Allegri was sent off late in Napoli's 3-3 draw with Roma on 24 October and, walking to his press conference, was heard accusing Roma of having been handed the Champions League place last season at Milan's expense. Roma's Gian Piero Gasperini called the remark unfortunate and declined to add anything. The disciplinary judge handed Allegri a two-match ban and a 10,000 euro fine, citing protests to the fourth official, remarks in the dressing room and an aggressive attitude towards a Roma executive. Napoli announced an appeal and then dropped it. Allegri misses Sunday at Juventus.
On Thursday, Inter and Milan unveiled the replacement for the San Siro: the Generali Stadium, around 71,500 seats, a continuous two-tier bowl with curva inclines of up to 37 degrees, designed by Foster and Partners with MANICA. Construction is scheduled from 2028 with a first match targeted for 2031-32, subject to approvals, at the centre of a 281,000 square metre regeneration. Naming rights run from day one.

PSG lead without their best winger, the league is selling its television rights two years early, and street protests are moving kickoff times.
Paris Saint-Germain beat Lyon 2-0 on Monday, both goals from substitutes, Senny Mayulu on 72 minutes and Mika Godts on 84. The match had been pushed back a day on a police directive because of continuing protests in Paris, which meant most of the PSG delegation could not attend the Ballon d'Or in London. PSG were named men's club of the year there; Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele and Fabian Ruiz finished sixth, seventh and tenth.
Kvaratskhelia ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament in the Champions League win over Barcelona on 20 October and faces surgery. Dembele and Marquinhos are out with thigh injuries, Nuno Mendes with a knock. PSG lead on 17 points from eight games, one ahead of Rennes.
The league's bigger story is commercial. On 21 October the LFP confirmed a new tender for Ligue 1 television rights, bidding open from 3 November to 7 December, for the 2027 to 2032 cycle, two years before the current one expires. The structure changes to a single lot covering every match. Ligue 1+, the league's own platform launched a year ago after the broadcaster vacuum of 2024-25, has not generated enough revenue for the clubs. President Vincent Labrune said "for the first time in a long while, French football is in a position to choose its future," citing concrete expressions of interest without naming any party. A source close to the LFP told Sud Radio they knew of no declared candidate.
Protests continue to reshape the calendar: Nice against Rennes moved to Friday night, Lorient against Brest to Monday night, Lyon against Angers to Sunday afternoon. At Lyon, meanwhile, OL Groupe disclosed two fresh pieces of litigation from former owner John Textor, a 20.9 million euro claim in the Lyon commercial court and a New York action naming Botafogo and OL. The club disputes owing anything.

Two matchdays left, the Shield already decided, the Golden Boot three goals apart, and five playoff places still open.
Nashville SC clinched the Supporters' Shield on Saturday 24 October, beating CF Montreal 2-0 at Stade Saputo through Sam Surridge and captain Hany Mukhtar, with three matches to spare. It is the club's first Shield, in its seventh MLS season, and the fifth in a row won by an expansion club. Nashville have conceded 23 goals in 32 games, a rate of 0.72 per game that would be the best mark in a 34-game MLS season, and are 14-0-1 at GEODIS Park. They have 71 points and need four from their last two to break Inter Miami's single-season record of 74.
The Golden Boot is the live individual race. Lionel Messi has 25 goals and 15 assists, 40 goal contributions and a league best. Petar Musa of FC Dallas has 22. Both drew a blank in midweek, so the gap is three with two games to play. Messi is the clear favourite for a third consecutive MVP.
Nine clubs per conference reach the playoffs, with eighth and ninth meeting in a single-game Wild Card round. In the East, Orlando and Cincinnati are level on 43 with Columbus a point back on 41; the Red Bulls, Toronto and NYCFC can all be eliminated this weekend. In the West it is tighter still: Colorado and Seattle on 43, Real Salt Lake 42, the LA Galaxy 41, Portland 40, Minnesota 38, with three of those six going home. Vancouver clinch the West's top seed with a win over Seattle.
Sunday night at 4:00pm Pacific, New England host Inter Miami for the Eastern Conference's second seed. Miami have a league-best nine road wins and are chasing back-to-back MLS Cups, which nobody has managed since the Galaxy in 2011-12. Seattle, meanwhile, are in freefall: they lost 1-0 at home to Houston on Wednesday despite out-shooting them 21 to 2. "We're running out of runway," said Brian Schmetzer. Captain Cristian Roldan was blunter: "We might not even make the playoffs if we continue in this way."
Decision Day is Saturday 7 November, with unified kickoffs by conference. The playoffs run from 18 November to an MLS Cup final on Friday 18 December, the latest ever played and the last to be held in autumn: MLS moves to a summer-to-spring calendar from July 2027, with a 14-game transitional "Sprint Season" from 19 February to 8 May and an MLS Cup on Memorial Day weekend.
